  • A fail at Momentum.

A local show, Momentum, which is for artists 30 and under, took place over this past weekend.  I have no idea whether or not it was a successful event, but it failed in my eyes.  Our local art scene isn’t exactly what I would call flourishing.  With that in mind, why would we limit what little opportunites we already have to see local art?  New artists come along at all ages.  I was 26 when I first started shooting; I know more than a few who were 40+.  Supporting the local art scene can’t happen when those hosting the events are more interested in making money than they are anything else.  Let’s stop with the restrictions until we have an abundance of participants..  The guise of support for the local artist, is just that, until the local artists are no longer forced to adhere to preposterous restrictions.  Next up, Biting the Apple, where it seems as though the freakshow of attendees outshine the art, almost intentionally. I admire those who enter and continue to push in hopes of changing the scene. Though, I despise the art whores who support these shows with complete disregard to the big picture, seemingly to do little more than portray their “lifestyle” to others, however so feeble in the attempt.

    Canon is better than Nikon!

Clearly, you can see that ideas for photoshoots are just a button press away, and anyone can shoot like Ansel Adams, that is, if you shoot with Canon.  Pesky observers interrupting your location shoots?  Call upon the Vulcan Death Grip..  Try that with Nikon..  Pfft..  Fact is, the only real advantage to one over the other is how many of your friends are using equipment you can borrow and/or share.  Once you make an investment in lenses, you’re pretty much locked in.  The real reason to recommend your camera brand over another should be nothing more than familiarlarity, and well, selfishness..  If your buddy has a lot of money, maybe he’ll buy that one lens you can’t justify purchasing, but sure would be happy to borrow..  I’ve recently reconnected with an old friend, who happens to also be a photographer, well sort of..  He’s a Nikon guy.  So, I’ll pretend my camera manufacturer is better, but really, I just wish we could trade lenses some times.. :)

The 2009 Festival of the Arts takes place April 21-26 in Downtown Oklahoma City, and once again, shows a declination in the showcasing of any figure photography whatsoever.  There were some decent still life work, amongst the paintings, drawings, and sculptures, but photography as a whole seemed to be scarce.  God this city needs something more…

    Another bs agency

I sincerely hope that if you’re interested in modeling, you actually take the time to think about the decisions you make when it comes to “agencies” and “managers”.

A few nights ago, I see a “new modeling agency” that I haven’t come across before. Being that I’ve been shooting on and off in Oklahoma for a decade, I’m always interested in keeping up with who or what makes up this local industry, or lack thereof. Mostly, it’s a bunch of guys with cameras who are borderline predators, or wannabe models who think implants are more important than talent. Photographers who claim to shoot fashion, while we have no fashion industry here, and models who think Maxim and Playboy are the upper echelon of modeling. read more

    Finding Models

I’ve always stated that my real talent wasn’t in my ability to capture photographs, but in my ability to select good subjects.  Sure, anyone could go through a list of models and find someone appealing to shoot, but I typically don’t shoot people who are interested in modeling.  I prefer them to be untouched by the masses.  That being said, most of the people I’ve worked with have been either friends, or random people I’ve met in person.  The problem with this is, I’ve wanted to shoot more steadily over the last few weeks.  I would like to take the time, this year, to shoot more regularly, and finding models at my usual pace won’t suffice.  So, how does one find new models without having to deal with the bullshit associated with the online communities?  My talent fails when given time constraints!
